A BLACKLIST AGAINST GREENWASHING

18. May 2026

The new EU directive against greenwashing is set to fundamentally reshape how companies communicate sustainability. In the latest issue of Kleine Zeitung, PHH partner Martina Stranzinger-Maier shares her insights on the key implications of the so-called EmpCo Directive (“Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition”).

Going forward, general environmental and sustainability claims such as “environmentally friendly,” “climate neutral,” or “green” will be subject to significantly stricter regulation. Companies will be required to substantiate such claims clearly and communicate them transparently. Misleading statements based on only partial aspects of a product or insufficient disclosures are also expected to face increased scrutiny.

The directive aims to better protect consumers from misleading advertising while creating a fairer competitive environment for businesses.
